Scope

The third test focuses on learning outcomes L5, L6, and L10, which pertain to nonparametric inference, regression, and inference for proportions, respectively. This covers the following topics:

  1. nonparametric alternatives to inference for means

    • sign test (one-sample alternative)
    • signed rank test (one-sample alternative)
    • rank sum test (two-sample alternative)
    • Kruskal-Wallis test (ANOVA alternative)
  2. simple linear regression

    • correlation and linear trends
    • least squares estimation
    • inference for regression coefficients
    • prediction
  3. inference for one and two proportions

    • exact binomial test
    • approximate test for one proportion
    • approximate test for a difference in proportions
    • confidence intervals for the above

In terms of class material, this covers all lectures in weeks 6-8 and textbook sections 5.5.3-5.5.4, 6.1-6.5, and 8.1-8.3.

For the inferential methods listed above, you should be able to: (i) identify the relevant population parameter and articulate hypotheses and alternatives in statistical notation; (ii) perform calculations in R to obtain point estimates, confidence intervals, test statistics, and p-values; and (iii) be able to interpret results using technically precise language following the “conventional style” used in class.

While not tested directly, the material above relies heavily on general hypothesis testing and estimation concepts introduced earlier in the quarter.

Preparation

I recommend reviewing the following materials to prepare:

  1. Lecture notes and slides
  2. Textbook sections
  3. Homework assignments
  4. Lab activities

You may also wish to try a few example problems from the relevant textbook sections.

Format

The first test will be a take-home assessment that you may complete anytime on Friday, May 23. In format it will be similar to your homework assignments, insofar as you will have:

  • a Posit Cloud project to complete
  • a Microsoft Forms quiz to submit

The test is open-book and open-note, but you must complete it individually. No discussion or collaboration with other students in the class is allowed; failure to adhere to this policy will result in loss of credit.

To complete the test on time, you must submit the MS Forms quiz by 11:59pm Friday, May 23. In accord with class policy, there is a one-hour grace period on the submission deadline; otherwise, extensions must be arranged in advance.
